Thanksgiving is a cherished time for gratitude, connection, and, of course, delicious feasts. For women, balancing the festivities with personal wellness goals can feel like a juggling act. As a busy mom, working and balancing parenting, while also hosting Thanksgiving and trying to keep my health and wellness goals on track, I understand the unique challenges you face! This Thanksgiving, let’s focus on enjoying the day for what it is, savoring the food mindfully, staying active in ways that feel good, and managing stress effectively. Here are some science-backed tips to help you embrace a balanced and joyful holiday.
1. Enjoy the Day for What It Is
Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate with loved ones and reflect on what we’re grateful for. Instead of viewing the holiday through the lens of dieting or fitness, shift your perspective to fully enjoy the experience, on this holiest of foodie holidays.
Mindset Matters
Gratitude Focus: Take a moment before the meal to acknowledge the people and blessings in your life. This positive mindset can enhance your overall enjoyment of the day.
Presence: Be present with your family and friends. Engage in conversations, share stories, and create lasting memories without the constant distraction of worry over your weight or health. If you are currenlty healthy enough to be with your family, in this moment, simply enjoy that for what it is.
2. Savor Your Meal Mindfully
Mindful eating is about being fully present while eating, enjoying each bite without guilt or overindulgence. It’s not about restriction or healthy swaps, but about fostering a healthy relationship with food.
Visualize and Anticipate
Imagine Your Meal: Before the meal, even up to a week beforehand, take a few moments to visualize the delicious foods you’re about to enjoy. This anticipation can heighten your sensory experience and increase satisfaction.
Set Intentions: Decide to focus on savoring the flavors, textures, and aromas of each dish. This intentional approach can help you feel more satisfied with smaller portions.
Trust Yourself
Listen to Your Body: Eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re comfortably full. Trust your body’s hunger and satiety signals to guide your eating.
No Guilt Zone: Allow yourself to enjoy the foods you love without labeling them as “good” or “bad.” This mindset reduces stress and promotes a healthier relationship with food.
3. Have a Plan for the Days Following Thanksgiving
One day of indulgence won’t derail your health goals. Planning ahead can help you return to your routine smoothly and even enjoy leftover treats without stress.
Manage Leftovers Wisely
Share the Abundance: Consider sending some of your leftovers home with guests. This not only reduces food waste but also shares the joy of the meal with others.
Freeze for Later: Portion out leftovers and freeze them for future meals. This way, you can enjoy them without feeling overwhelmed or guilty. Have a set date to look forward to bringing them out.
Schedule Active Recovery
Move in Ways That Feel Good: Incorporate gentle activities like walking, stretching, or yoga in the days following Thanksgiving. These movements help your body recover and maintain your fitness momentum.
Ease Back into Your Routine: Gradually resume your regular workout schedule rather than jumping back in full force, if you took a break. This approach prevents injury and keeps your motivation high. There is no need to punish yourself for enjoying your holiday.
Move in Ways That Feel Good
Staying active during the holidays doesn’t mean pushing yourself to exhaustion. It’s about finding enjoyable ways to incorporate movement into your day.
Family-Friendly Activities
Turkey Trot: Participate in a local Turkey Trot or organize a family walk or hike. It’s a fun way to burn calories and spend quality time together. Some peole enjoying pushing themselves before the big meal, others do not and it only adds to their stress. What truly works for you?
Dance Parties: Turn up the music and have a dance session with your family. It’s a joyful way to stay active and lift everyone’s spirits.
Family Hike: If you have company in town, this can be a fun way to show off the beautiful nature we have in Loudoun County!
Pre-Meal Exercise
Boost Your Appetite: Exercising before your meal can increase your hunger, making you more attuned to your body’s needs and helping you enjoy your meal more mindfully.
Enhance Enjoyment: A light workout can boost your mood and energy levels, making the entire day feel more vibrant and enjoyable.
Note: The focus here is not on "earning your meal". You deserve a decilcious Thanksgiving dinner just as much as anyone, with or without a workout.!
Reduce Stress: Maintain Calm Amidst the Chaos
Thanksgiving can bring both joy and stress. Managing stress effectively is crucial for maintaining your overall well-being and enjoying the holiday fully.
Plan Ahead
Meal Prep: Prepare as much as you can in advance to reduce last-minute stress. Chop vegetables, cook in bulk, and set the table the day before.
Create a Schedule: Outline a clear schedule for the day, including time for meals, activities, and relaxation. This structure can help you stay organized and calm.
Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation
Deep Breathing: Incorporate deep breathing exercises to calm your mind and reduce stress levels.
Meditation: Take a few minutes to meditate and center yourself before the day’s activities begin. Even a short meditation can have significant stress-reducing benefits.
Set Realistic Expectations
Let Go of Perfection: Accept that not everything will go perfectly and that’s okay. Focus on the joy of being with loved ones rather than on flawless execution. This is when I pull out my handy saying to beat perfectionism: "Going for a 7." Not a 9 or 10. This is not the Olympics. A 7 will do!
Delegate Tasks: Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Delegate cooking, cleaning, or organizing tasks to family members to lighten your load. As women, it can be so hard to actually implement this. But try it with at least one or two tasks!
Embrace a Balanced Approach
The key to enjoying Thanksgiving without compromising your health goals is balance. Here’s how to integrate all these tips seamlessly:
Personalize Your Strategy
Find What Works for You: Everyone’s body and lifestyle are different. Experiment with different strategies to see what makes you feel the most satisfied and stress-free. For some, avoiding gluten or other sensitivities or allergies is a MUST. Whatever strategy you implement, the point is to let go of the guilt, love yourself, and enjoy the holiday to the fullest.
Stay Flexible: Allow yourself the flexibility to adjust your plans as needed. If one approach doesn’t work, try another until you find the perfect balance.
Prioritize Self-Care
Take Breaks: Ensure you take short breaks throughout the day to relax and recharge.
Engage in Enjoyable Activities: Spend time doing things that make you happy, whether it’s reading a book, taking a walk, or enjoying a cup of tea.
Celebrate with Balance and Joy
Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate gratitude, connection, and nourishment. By embracing mindful eating without restriction, enjoying movement that feels good, planning ahead for the days following the holiday, and managing stress effectively, you can honor your wellness goals while fully enjoying the festivities. Remember, one day of indulgence is just a small part of your overall journey. Embrace the balance, cherish the moments with friends and family, and set a strong foundation for a healthy and happy new year.
